New CEO brings extraordinary record of raising resources and facilitating partnerships
The board of trustees of the Martin Luther King Jr. Performing and Cultural Arts Complex has chosen Regina Ann Campbell as president and CEO. A respected leader in Detroit’s economic development and nonprofit community, Campbell has facilitated access to more than $31 million for underserved businesses over the past decade. Since 2020, Campbell has been president and CEO of the BUILD Institute, which provides essential support and resources to emerging entrepreneurs creating new businesses in Detroit.
“Building partnerships and coalitions around amazing assets has been the theme of my career, and I am excited to enhance the reach and the resources of the King Arts Complex,” Campbell said. “This is an iconic community institution, and I am honored to have the opportunity to build on its legacy.”
Campbell will replace Demetries Neely, who served the King Arts Complex for more than 25 years, including the last 13 as CEO. Neely positioned the organization on a path of financial sustainability and built its brand equity in the Columbus Region.
“Bringing in a new CEO is part of moving the King Arts Complex forward, and I am very excited about Regina,” Neely said. “She is well equipped to tackle our challenges and advance our mission. I am a fan, and I think she is the right leader for this time. I cannot wait to see how the King Arts Complex evolves under Regina’s leadership, and I will be right here cheering her on.”
The King Arts Complex board selected Campbell among several strong candidates, following a search process led by Christie Angel, managing partner for BroadView Talent Partners. Prior to her tenure at the BUILD Institute, Campbell was chief program officer for Epicenter Memphis and managing director of the place-based entrepreneurship business unit for TechTown Detroit. She is a graduate of Western Michigan University and has earned master’s degrees from the University of Michigan, the University of Phoenix and Wayne State University.
“In a field of several outstanding candidates, Regina Ann Campbell’s exceptional experience stood out,” said board of directors Chair Alycia N. Broz. “The success she has achieved making community connections and raising resources presents a unique opportunity for the King Arts Complex. I am excited to support her as she leads the way in writing the next chapter for this storied organization.”
